Formula 1 took a step into the unknown on Saturday afternoon at Silverstone with the first ever Sprint event – a 17-lap dash to set the grid for Sunday's British Grand Prix.
Just 100km long and with no pit stops, the drivers were free to go all out for every lap in the afternoon sun at this most iconic of racing venues, and the results were spectacular.
Max Verstappen got the jump off the start line from second, nipping ahead of P1 starter Lewis Hamilton into Turn 1 to take a lead he would keep until the flag – despite Hamilton's harrying behind – and grab pole position for Sunday's Grand Prix.
But there was plenty of action throughout, including a terrific charge up the order for Fernando Alonso, a collision between George Russell and Carlos Sainz, and a dramatic high-speed spin for Sergio Perez. Hit play on the video above to see how F1's first ever Sprint played out...
