HIGHLIGHTS: Watch the action from final practice at Imola as Piastri sets the pace while Alonso and Perez crash
Oscar Piastri topped the timesheets during Saturday’s third and final practice session at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, leading the way from McLaren team mate Lando Norris and the two Ferrari drivers.
Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc had formed a one-two for the Scuderia in front of their home fans in the early stages of the session, but the final 10 minutes saw plenty of drivers bolt on fresh soft tyres and push for improvements.
However, moments after Piastri had gone fastest, Sergio Perez lost control of his Red Bull at the exit of the Variante Alta and brought out the red flags – meaning others following had to abandon their laps.
When the session resumed, Norris triggered a change to the top three as he slotted between Piastri and the Ferraris, with George Russell placing fifth in his Mercedes and Max Verstappen only sixth in the other Red Bull.
There was another moment of drama midway through the session when Fernando Alonso crashed his updated Aston Martin at Rivazza, giving the Spaniard’s mechanics a significant repair job before qualifying.
