MUST-SEE: Relive the highlights of F1’s first-ever championship race in full colour footage

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the first-ever F1 championship race, the 1950 British Grand Prix – and, to celebrate the occasion, we have visited the archives to share full colour footage from the milestone event.

The race saw 24 drivers go head-to-head across 70 laps at Silverstone in front of a crowd estimated to number up to 120,000 spectators. There were also prestigious guests in attendance, including His Royal Highness King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret.

Giuseppe ‘Nino’ Farina lined up on pole for Alfa Romeo ahead of Luigi Fagioli and Juan Manuel Fangio, with Fangio going on to take the lead – but it was Farina who claimed victory after Fangio was forced to retire owing to a broken oil pipe.
