RACE START: Watch the getaway in Canada as Russell holds the lead in wet conditions while Haas’s strategy gamble pays off

It was a solid start from pole-sitter George Russell to the Canadian Grand Prix, with the Mercedes driver holding onto the lead in damp conditions.

Russell led cautiously but cleanly away from Max Verstappen as the lights went out while the rest of the pack followed, throwing up spray in their wake amid plenty of standing water on the circuit from earlier heavy rainfall.

There were moves further back as Lewis Hamilton gained on Daniel Ricciardo, while Charles Leclerc made up two positions from P11 before running wide in the Ferrari and slipping back.

Elsewhere there was contact between Sergio Perez and Pierre Gasly, with the Red Bull driver trying to make his way forwards after a difficult qualifying saw him line up in P16.

Two eye-catching starts came from the Haas pair of Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg, the sole cars in the field to start on the full wet tyre rather than the intermediate. Magnussen surged into the top-10 from P14, with Hulkenberg also carving his way through from P17.
