WATCH: Kevin Magnussen's electric start from P17 at Silverstone

At the beginning of any Grand Prix the attention is always on the front couple of rows of the grid: will the polesitter lead away off the line, or can one of the cars behind get a better getaway and snatch the lead into the first corner?

In Sunday's 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, Valtteri Bottas did everything right when the lights went out to lead into Turn 1 from pole position, but further down the field Kevin Magnussen had a flying start in his Haas, as you can see in the video above.

The Dane started 17th, but shot off the line and got by AlphaTauri's Daniil Kvyat and George Russell in the Williams on the pit straight. Then he was alongside his team mate Romain Grosjean – who had started 14th – but outdragged him into the first corner, before having to react quickly to avoid the spinning Sebastian Vettel.

Sadly for Magnussen, that electric start was about as good as it got in the race, as he was handed a penalty for hitting Nicholas Latifi's Williams when rejoining the track after running wide, and then had to retire the car on Lap 45 amid worsening vibrations from his tyres.

“The car just hasn’t performed this weekend as we know it can. We know it can perform, especially on a Sunday in race conditions. It just hasn’t happened this weekend," he said, adding: "I had a great start again, so I’ll take that away as a positive and try and continue to keep doing that."
