Max Verstappen set a sumptuous fastest lap in Belgian Grand Prix qualifying with a time that was 0.820s quicker than second-placed Charles Leclerc. But the Ferrari man will inherit pole position for Sunday’s race after the drivers’ championship leader was hit with a five-place grid penalty for a gearbox change.
In an exhilarating qualifying session, it had been a bumpy ride for the Red Bull man, who just managed to squeeze into Q3 in 10th place. But he shrugged off his annoyance by putting in a blistering lap around the Belgian track in Q3, and will look to move up the order as quickly as possible come Sunday.
